Republic of\u00a0Slovenia<\/a> lies at the very heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, where the Pannonian Plain meets the mysterious Karst. It neighbours Austria to the north, Hungary to the east, Croatia to the south and Italy to the west. Two million people live on a national territory of slightly more than twenty thousand square kilometres. The capital and largest city of Slovenia is\u00a0Ljubljana<\/a>.<\/h5>\n<\/div>

Slovenia has been an ancient meeting point of\u00a0West Slavic<\/a>,\u00a0South Slavic<\/a>,\u00a0Germanic<\/a>,\u00a0Romance<\/a>, and\u00a0Hungarian<\/a>\u00a0languages and culture. Throughout history, the present territory of Slovenia has been part of various state formations, including the\u00a0Roman Empire<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Holy Roman Empire<\/a>, followed by the\u00a0Habsburg Monarchy<\/a>,\u00a0State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs<\/a>,\u00a0Kingdom<\/a> and later Federal People\u2019s (and Socialist Federal) Republic of Yugoslavia<\/a>. Slovenia became an independent state in 1991. It has since established a well-profiled international position and reputation as a democratic, stable and prosperous Central European country.<\/p>\n

Slovenia became a member of the EU on May 1, 2004.<\/p>\n
